Crystal of Atlan is a New Free to Play Magicpunk MMORPG

Crystal of Atlan is a brand spanking new gacha-esque action MMO from Nuverse Games (Flower, Marvel Snap). CoA was released on May 28, 2025, and it’s actually a pretty decent, free to play Action MMO available on PC, PS5, and mobile and it supports cross-play. You can download Crystal of Atlan here.

Story

Gotta be honest with you, I’m not quite sure what the main plot of Crystal of Atlan is all about. However, I am enjoying going through the main storyline. Here’s what I’ve gathered so far. You play as an adventurer in this floating world called Atlan where magic and tech perfectly complement each other. Think Gadgetstan in World of Warcraft, except Atlan is a lush, green world. You join the Adventurers Guild in Lumiville. You embark on missions, quests, and adventures throughout this stunningly beautiful magicpunk world to uncover the mysteries of the Ancient Atlan Ruins and the Crystal of Atlan.

The Crystal is an artifact that recently resurfaced, causing chaos across Atlan with powerful factions vowing to find it first to harness its power. Of course, it falls upon you and other adventurers to ensure the Crystal doesn’t fall into the hands of evildoers.

Classes

So far, there are 5 classes with 11 Branches (specializations). And the classes are gender-locked. Each of the five classes has two or three specialties you will be able to choose and go between until level 45.

  • Puppeteer: Scytheguard and Blademaiden

  • Magister: Elementalist, Warlock, Magician

  • Fighter: Cloudstrider and Starbreaker

  • Musketeer: Bounty Hunter and Gunner

  • Swordsman: Magiblade and Berserker

Right now, there are only two Support specializations: Scytheguard and Magician. Starbreaker is tanky and Berserker could be as well.

Character Customization

Once you hit level 15, you are given a quest that will allow you to customize your character. Character customization is extremely limited. Still, limited character customization is better than none. Also, the game just released today, so there’s sure to be more to come.

You can unlock character skins or outfits and I’m sure hairstyles will come soon as well being that this looks to separate itself from gacha games and sell mostly cosmetics.

Gameplay

The combat is incredibly fluid and fast-paced. Leveling doesn’t feel like a grind and you earn points to unlock so many spells at once. The combat UI starts with four slots for spells 1 through 4, a power-up (press Q when it’s available), and your ultimate (press R). The combat focuses on a 3D perspective with an option for 2.5D as well. The slow-motion finishes are *chef’s kiss*. As you level up, you unlock four more slots for spells.

You will also learn three Life Skills: Gathering, Cooking, and Crafting. All of these a simple enough. One thing about this game is nothing is overly complicated to figure out. However, cooking does use up your Stamina.

This is not an open-world game, but the towns you visit look and feel open. You can explore outside of the towns for gathering and missions, but it’s a very limited space.

Art and Visuals

This donghua (Chinese animation) action MMO is so beautiful. I’m especially enjoying the art direction of making magicpunk flow seamlessly. The style and movement feel like a cross between Wuthering Waves and Genshin. The character animations are smooth, and the combat effects don’t overpower the screen, even when you’re casting multiple spells. Towns like Lumiville are full of small design details that give each zone personality, everything from the lighting to the environmental textures feels polished and intentional. Even the UI elements carry that magicpunk flair, making the whole experience feel cohesive without being cluttered.

Player Housing

At level 14, you will have access to player housing in a floating town called Lumiville. Your home is for resting to replenish your energy. You can also unlock items to decorate your house including a gramophone to play music that you collect throughout your travels.

Photo Mode

Photo Mode unlocks at level 15 with a photo quest. To solve the photo quest, you will aim your camera at the zeppelin, zoom out, then take your photo. After completing this quest, you can access your camera by pressing H for Character Roulette. There, you’ll find the camera at the top.

Photo Mode options are extremely limited, but they allow you to capture stills of this gorgeous game.

Pets

One of the coolest things about Crystal of Atlan is you get pet companions. Once you reach level 26, you will unlock the quest to get your very first pet, Jackalope. Like your adventurer, you can upgrade your pet’s skills.

Crystal of Atlan might not reinvent the genre, but it brings just enough style, smooth combat, and polish to stand out, especially for a Day One release. Between the magicpunk vibe, fast-paced action, and solid progression system, there's a lot to like here. If you're looking for a free-to-play MMO that doesn’t feel overly grindy or confusing, give CoA a shot. It’s got potential, and with more content likely on the way, this one might just stick around in your gaming rotation.
