How to Play “House of Legacy” - Out Now on Steam

House of Legacy is a gorgeous new city-builder and management simulation game from three-person indie dev team, S3 Studio and Thermite Games. This sandbox game takes place in ancient China where you play a fallen clan leader who must reestablish his/her home and legacy. Rebuild your estate, make diplomatic alliances, grow your family and clan’s influence through trade, alliances, and very careful and strategic planning.
To survive and thrive in this world, you have to know how to take care of yourself, your family, your home, your business, your troops, and more. But first things first.
Character Creation and Development
Right now, the game is in early access on Steam, so there are a lot of things that are unavailable at this time. Character creation is very simple. When creating your character, the most important thing is to allocate for the traits that will best suit your clan’s growth. Unfortunately, the points system is set up to where you can only select one or two traits. The most useful traits are Cunning, Masterful, and Scholarly. Choose Masterful to help with the military and political paths. Beautiful trait can help your marriage with noble clans.
Hobby
Each person, whether part of your clan or other clan, has a hobby. If you want to improve your family member’s mood or gain favor with a person from another clan, give them a gift that aligns with their hobby. Here is each hobby and where to acquire the gifts from.
Art: Buy art at the Book Store.
Music: Buy music at the Book Store.
Wine: Buy wine at the grocery store.
Ink: Buy in at the Book Store.
Pelt: Buy pelt at the general store.
Antique: Assign a family member to find antiques.
Vase: Buy vases at the general store.
Tea Set: Buy tea sets at the general store.
Incense: Buy incense at the general store.
Talent
Each clan member will be born with Talent. The two main talents they are born with are Might and Writing. A rarer talent is Technology. To best use your members, make them study according to their Talent. Buy books at the Book Store. If your clan member’s skill is low, start them with the lowest book of their Talent.
Having a high Talent in Writing allows you to get government positions. First you will start by taking the three main exams. To pass the first exam your writing should be at 20.
Having high talent in Might leads to becoming a higher chance in winning wars and becoming a general.
How to Replenish Health
In House of Legacy, illness can befall you or your family members at any time. There are no clinics or physicians. However, there may be random Daoist. To maintain your clan members’ health, make sure to feed them, gift them their favorite items, and send adults to the tea house regularly.
The best way to increase health and keep them healthy is to go the family member (do this for all of them) and select “Select All” so that they will automatically eat whenever you have food in your warehouse. Also, gifting them something from their Hobby will increase their mood and boost their health. So does sending adults to the Tea House. Having farm(s) makes feeding and snacking much easier.
How to Increase Security
To increase security at your estate and on farms, build walls, fences, and gates. Yes. That’s it. Just build walls, fences, and gates and fences with the Security stat.
How to Raise Your Clan’s Status
So much in House of Legacy hinges on the relationships you build and the paths you choose for your family members. So, how do you raise your clan’s status? You raise your clan’s status by completing the quests on the left side of your screen, by raising your connection with other families, and by gaining political and military positions.
How to Become a Government Official
You can become a government official by using a character with high Writing and passing the successive tests. Or you can use a character with high Might to earn rewards in battle.
It’s best to hold the position of Magistrate of a town or the Provincial Governor of a province/city and work on your relationships with other clans before taking a position on the Royal Court.
Do not make the mistake of climbing the ranks of court without increasing your relationships with at least one clan first. Otherwise, you will run the risk of being set up, impeached, and/or executed. Yes, I thought I would get my family members positions on the royal court first, then work on relationships. Nope. Three different clans on the court had my family members impeached for different reasons. One was exiled for three years and the other was beheaded. I immediately had my War Minister resign until further notice.
House of Legacy may look peaceful on the surface, but this city-builder requires you to strategically build solid relationships and manage your resources wisely to survive. With the game still in early access, expect updates that add more depth and challenge to your legacy-building journey. Take your time, plan ahead, and guide your clan with intention, because one misstep could cost everything.
