Wuthering Waves - Guide to Resonators, Tacet Discords, and Energies

Wuthering Waves, the latest action RPG from Kuro Games, has introduced a fascinating feature known as Resonators. These Resonators are not just characters; they are the core of the gameplay, each bringing a unique set of skills, abilities, and energies that define their combat roles and the game's narrative. It’s important to understand the key elements of Resonators’ energies, skills, and how best to use them when fighting Tacet Discords.

The Resonators and Their Energies

Wuthering Waves starts with 16 playable Resonators, including Rover, your character.  Each Resonator’s skills and abilities include a basic attack, a Forte Circuit, Resonance Liberation, and Intro/Outro skills. You can unlock Resonators through the in-game gacha system known as Convenes, participating in events, and achieving certain milestones within the game.

Rover (you)

Rover is a 5-star character that uses Spectro Energy. They can also use Resonance Conversion to convert their Spectral energy into Havoc energy without having to switch out their Echoes to match the Resonator’s energy.

Baizhi

Baizhi uses Glacial energy and a Rectifier as a weapon. Her abilities are designed to manipulate ice energies, making her an essential character for battles against fiery foes. Players will unlock Baizhi very early on while completing the beginner quest.

Calcharo

Calcharo is a 5-star Resonator that is unlocked as one of the Beginner’s Choice Convene pulls. He uses Electro energy and a Broadblade as his weapon. His skills are charged with electro energies, perfect for stunning and incapacitating enemies.

Jiyan, another 5-Star Resonator, uses Aero energy and carries a Broadblade that slices through the air with precision. His skills are aerodynamic, allowing her to deal swift and impactful blows. Jiyan is available through the Convene banners, where players can summon characters using the in-game currency, Radiant Tide.

Yangyang

Yangyang's Aero Sword is as sharp as it is swift. Her abilities harness the power of wind, enabling her to outmaneuver opponents with ease. Yangyang can be obtained through the Convene banners, like her Aero counterpart Jiyan.

Danjin

Danjin brings havoc to the battlefield with her Havoc Sword. She unleashes chaotic energies, to disrupt enemy formations. Danjin is also available through the Convene banners.

Chixia

Chixia's Fusion Pistol is a testament to her versatility. Her skills blend different energies, allowing her to adapt to various combat scenarios. Chixia can be unlocked by participating in the game's events and through the gacha system.

Taoqi

Taoqi's Havoc Broadblade is a symbol of destruction. Her abilities are explosive, making her a valuable asset in any team. Taoqi can be summoned through the Convene banners.

Sanhua

Sanhua, with her Glacio Sword, is a master of ice. Her skills can freeze enemies in their tracks, providing strategic advantages. Players can get Sanhua for free during special login events.

Lingyang

Lingyang's Glacio Gauntlet gives her the power to shatter her enemies with ice. Her skills are both defensive and offensive, offering a balanced approach to combat. Lingyang is available through the Convene banners.

Yuanwu

Yuanwu's Electro Gauntlet electrifies the battlefield. His skills are designed to paralyze and control the flow of battle. Yuanwu can be obtained through the game's gacha system.

Mortifi

Mortifi's Fusion Pistol is a unique weapon that combines different elemental energies. His skills are unpredictable, making him a wildcard in any fight. Mortifi can be unlocked through the Convene banners.

How to Upgrade Your Resonators

Upgrading your Resonators means upgrading their level and power, not your Union Level. You level your Union Level by gaining experience points. The process of upgrading your Resonators is easy. From the Resonator’s menu, you can upgrade everything: Resonator, Weapon, Echoes, Forte, and your Resonance Chain. You can even learn about the Voice Actors of the Resonators on the very last tab.

Though the process of upgrading your Resonators is easy, acquiring the materials after you reach a certain level is not as easy. For normal upgrades, you will use a Basic Resonance Potion (green), Medium Resonance Potion (blue), and Advanced Resonance Potion (purple). You can get these from completing quests, finding treasure, killing mobs, at vendors, or in the Shop. Levels are Capped at each tenth level until you Ascend.

At each tenth level, a Resonator will be able to Ascend, allowing them to level up to the next tenth level. Each Resonator requires specific materials for their Ascension. Clicking on the materials will give you more information about the material and where you can find it.

When you get to Ascension Rank 3, one of your Resonator’s required Ascension materials may come from a weekly boss. So, spend and upgrade wisely. It’s best to upgrade the Resonators you will use most before all others.

As mentioned, there are three world bosses that are weekly bosses and, therefore, have a weekly Claim Limit: Bell-Borne Geochelone in Gorges of Spirits – Tolling Stream, Statue of the Crownless in Norfall Barrens – Suspended Ruins, and Scar / Chaotic Juncture: Ember located in Central Plains – Qichi Village.

Understanding the different energies and weapons of each Resonator is crucial when building your team to fight bosses. With six different elements and five weapon types, you need to strategize to create balanced and synergistic teams. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each element and weapon type is key to mastering Wuthering Waves.

Energies

There are six distinct elemental types: Fusion, Glacio, Aero, Electro, Spectro, and Havoc. Resonators and Tacet Discords are aligned with an element or energy.

  • Fusion, representing fire, is characterized by its destructive and explosive potential, often dealing area-of-effect damage.

  • Glacio, the essence of ice, can freeze opponents, slowing them down or completely immobilizing them, which is crucial for controlling the battlefield.

  • Aero, symbolizing air, offers agility and swift strikes, allowing Resonators to maneuver quickly and deal rapid strikes.

  • Electro, as the name suggests, harnesses the power of electricity, capable of chaining attacks between multiple foes and stunning them.

  • Spectro, the element of light, provides various buffs and healing abilities, supporting allies in combat.

  • Havoc embodies chaos or dark energy, often associated with powerful debuffs and curses that weaken enemies.

Tacet Discord and How to Defeat Them

Like Resonators, Tacet Discords deal a specific type of energy damage. TDs that deal a specific type of energy damage will also have a high resistance to that energy damage. For example, a TD that deals Havoc damage will have “High RES” to Havoc damage. And so forth.

Echoes

Echoes in Wuthering Waves are the captured essences of defeated Tacet Discords. These essences are stored within your Data Bank and can be equipped to your Resonator to enhance combat abilities and stats. Each Resonator can carry up to five Echoes, with the first slot being 'Active,' allowing the Echo to be summoned for assistance during battles. The remaining Echoes serve as stat boosters, providing various enhancements to the Resonator.

Echoes are categorized into four classes: Common, Elite, Overlord, and Calamity, each with a corresponding cost that contributes to a Resonator's total Echo Cost limit. This limit is initially set at 10 but can be increased as the player's Data Bank levels up. You must strategically select Echoes that fit within the cost limit to optimize their Resonator's combat potential.

Players are using a 4-3-3-1-1 setup, where a 4 Cost Overlord or Calamity Echo is equipped as the main, followed by two 3 Cost Elite Echoes, and concluding with two 1 Cost Common Echoes. This setup balances the cost limit while maximizing the combat effectiveness of the Resonator.

Each element has its strengths and weaknesses, and understanding these is key to mastering the game. End-game content, such as the Tower of Adversity, challenges players to assemble teams that can cover each other's elemental weaknesses, highlighting the tactical layer added by the element system.
