The Sony PS5 Reveal

Though we live-tweeted throughout Sony’s Playstation 5 Reveal event, we had to come back and break it all the way down for you: the minimalist hardware, accessories, and PS5 exclusive games. Unfortunately, Sony did not give us a price for the PS5 and hardware nor is there an official release date for the PS5. Here’s what they did reveal.

PS5 Hardware

The Playstation 5 console comes in a clean, minimalist white with exterior, black interior with classic Playstation blue lighting. The next gen console will give gamers a choice between two different systems: the Playstation 5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition without a disc drive.

Both the digital and the standard editions of the PS5 will have an SSD for faster game loads and rendering and be fully backward compatible with PS4 games, but it will be gradual. On the Playstation Blog, Hideaki Nishino Senior Vice President of Platform Planning & Management said, “With all of the amazing games in PS4’s catalog, we’ve devoted significant efforts to enable our fans to play their favorites on PS5. We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5.”

PS5 Specs

The PS5 console can either be placed vertically or laid on its side. Here are the specifications for the PS5.

Accessories

The PS5 Reveal event also gave us a look at the accessories that will be available when the console launches.

DualSense (Not DualShock) Controllers

We got a look at Playstation 5’s DualSense controllers back in April. DualSense is a departure from Playstation’s signature DualShock rumble. DualSense is using haptic feedback and adaptive triggers to replace the rumble, which will give players a more immersive gaming experience.

DualSense Charging Station

The DualSense charging station will charge two wireless DualSense controllers simultaneously. No wires required.

Pulse 3D Wireless Headset

The next-gen headset will give players a 3D audio experience with a noise cancelling microphone.

Media Remote

For the gamers who also use their Playstation for Netflix, Youtube, and more, the PS5 comes with a universal remote control.

HD Camera

Sony Playstation 5 will also feature dual 1080p cameras for streaming and VR play.

Games Premiering on Playstation 5

To be honest, the best thing about the Sony PS5 Reveal was the games and how amazing they looked on Unreal Engine 5. We watched the event with Black Girl Gamers hosted by @thatsoalykat on Twitch. Though we were mad hype and excited to see Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the game we were all waiting to see was Horizon Forbidden West.

Though there were lots of surprises that made my pocket sweat with the fear of impending emptiness, the biggest surprise was Bethesda Studios’ Deathloop that features two Black protagonists, Colt and Julianna Blake, both playable.

Play as Colt

Deathloop takes place on a lawless, paradise island where an assassin, Colt, is being hunted mercilessly by everyone on the island. Colt is trapped in a time loop where relives each day over and over. But each time, he’s able to place a new piece to the puzzle to break his “deathloop.”

Play as Julianna

Julianna is a rival assassin who wants to keep the deathloop going. She enjoys the deadly cat-and-mouse game and doesn’t want the fun to end, and she’ll do everything in her power to stop Colt.

Other games revealed during the event include Village: Resident Evil, Ratchet and Clank, Rift Apart, Project Athia, and an expansion of Grand Theft Auto V (how much longer are they going to milk GTA V before they give us GTA 6?).
