Starfield’s January 17 Update and the Upcoming DLC: What You Need to Know

Today via the Starfield official Discord, Bethesda announced that the issues that were found have been resolved and the planned update will be released on Thursday, January 18. So, stay tuned for the full patch notes for this huge update to the Steam Beta.

Bethesda announced in the Starfield official Discord that the Wednesday update will be delayed because the “team discovered an issue they want to address before releasing the update into the Steam beta.”

Bethesda took to Twitter/X to announce Starfield is getting a major update on January 17, calling it the “biggest Starfield update yet.” The update will bring over 100 fixes and improvements to the game, as well as some graphical enhancements for NPCs and space environments. In this blog post, we will tell you everything you need to know about the upcoming update and the first DLC, "Shattered Space", which is expected to launch later this year.

What's in the Starfield Update?

According to the official patch notes, the Starfield update will address some of the most common issues and bugs reported by players, such as quest glitches, UI problems, performance drops, and crashes. Some of the highlights of the update are:

  • Improved NPC facial animations and expressions

  • Enhanced lighting and shadows for space stations and planets

  • Fixed several quests that were not progressing or completing properly

  • Added more options and settings for PC players, such as FOV slider, mouse sensitivity, and key bindings

  • Optimized loading times and memory usage

  • Improved stability and performance across all platforms

  • The update will also add some new features and content to the game, such as:

  • New weapons, armor, and items to find and craft

  • New dialogue options and choices for some characters and factions

  • New random events and encounters in space and on planets

  • New achievements and trophies to unlock

The update will be available for download on January 17 for all platforms: PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. The full patch notes have not been released yet.

What's in the Starfield DLC?

While the update will keep you busy for a while, you might also be wondering about the first DLC for Starfield, which was officially announced in December. The DLC, "Shattered Space" will take you to a new region of the galaxy, where a mysterious anomaly has caused a massive rift in space-time. The DLC will introduce new planets, factions, enemies, quests, and secrets to discover. You will also get access to a new spaceship, the Shatterer, which can travel through the rift and explore its dangers.

If we follow Bethesda’s DLC release pattern, Shattered Space can be expected to launch in February/March of 2024, but no exact release date has been confirmed yet. However, Bethesda has promised to share more details and gameplay footage soon.
