First Impression of the Pulsar Nova Optical PRO Gaming Keyboard
Pulsar presents their Nova Optical PRO Gaming Keyboard more like a high-end accessory than the entry-level piece it is. Though packaging isn’t everything, presentation does matter. And Pulsar nails it.
The Nova Optical PRO, like the other keyboards, come in a smooth, matte black package with the shiny black logo on surface. The interior of the packaging has Pulsar’s signature cartoon on the base with blue accents. The keyboard is protected with a plastic cover and a dust bag over the keyboard.
At first glance, the matte black, Nova Optical PRO keyboard looks like any other RGB backlit, gaming keyboard. But the devil is in the details. Pulsar’s keyboards use a distinct font that’s almost futuristic. The RGB doesn’t glow as bright as other RGB keyboards. I think the somewhat muted RGB brilliance is deliberate because it complements the keyboard’s overall aesthetic.
Nova Optical PRO’s front panel includes a muted black product and model label. There’s a muted black Pulsar logo just above the arrow keys. The bottom of the keyboard has a transparent backing and includes the certified water and dust proof sticker. Even though Pulsar branding is all over the keyboard, the black branding looks more stylish, chic, and minimalist than garish.
Red linear switches hold firmly, but not too tight, beneath the keycaps. These optical switches are hot swappable with both blue and red Kailh optical switches. Like most mechanical keyboards, typing can get a bit noisy, even though the Nova Optical PRO claims to be quiet. I found the Nova Optical a bit louder than the Lunar Alloy RGB, but not to the point of annoyance.
Customize the RGB lighting using Pulsar’s Fusion software. You can also customize macros, key bindings, and FN keys in Fusion.
Is the Pulsar Nova Optical PRO Gaming Keyboard really waterproof?
Yes. Although it broke my heart to pour water on a perfectly fine keyboard, I did it. I poured a half cup of water directly onto the keyboard. Then, I tipped the keyboard over and let the water drain from it for a few minutes. I wiped off the excess water and voila! The keyboard still worked with no issues.
Gamers looking for a high quality, mechanical, RGB keyboard that’s affordable, I’d highly recommend the Pulsar Nova Optical PRO. Though, I’m partial to the Lunar Alloy RGB full-size gaming keyboard, the Nova Optical PRO is still pretty decent.
