Wu Zhen, played by Tian Xi Wei, is no ordinary noblewoman. She is the daughter of the Duke of Henan and sister to the queen, a position that affords her both power and notoriety. She’s known across Chang’an as bold and unruly, spending her nights at the Lefang brothel. Behind her fearless exterior, however, lies a hidden truth that shapes her destiny.

From childhood, Wu Zhen could see spirits. As a child, there was a catastrophic city fire where she was lost and separated from her family. She was rescued by the Cat Master, a guardian of Chang’an’s hidden Demon City, and subsequently inherited his powers. With these powers, she now maintains balance among the spirits that roam beneath the city’s surface.

Mei Zhu Yu, played by Xu Kai is a prodigy in Taoist arts, who was sent to a temple at a young age where he cultivated his unmatched spiritual power. He shares Wu Zhen’s ability to see spirits, though he hides it from most of the world. His calm discipline and quiet strength complement Wu Zhen’s wild nature, making them an unlikely but perfect match. Together, they balance romance and duty as guardians of the unseen.

Performances That Shine

So far, everyone’s performance is pretty decent. However, a huge shout out to newcomer Wang Jia Yi as Liu Tai Zhen, the Snake Lord who protects the Demon City along with Wu Zhen. She does a phenomenal job of personifying a snake. She’s cunning, clever, reserved. She’s a guardian who is wise and deceptively protective. Wang Jia Yi may be one of my favorite breakout actresses of 2025.

Tian Xi Wei excels portraying all the mannerisms of a cat as the Cat Lord, from adorable to downright scary. She’s fun, playful, and calculating. This may be one of her best performances.

Xu Kai’s performance is good, but I’ve seen much, much better from him. I’m not used to him playing very stoic, low-energy characters. Still, he does it well. The chemistry between Xu Kai and Tian Xi Wei may be one of the strongest draws of the show for some.

Although the series features Taoist magic, spirits, and an underworld filled with intrigue, at its heart it is about relationships, identity, and personal responsibility. Wu Zhen’s journey reflects the push and pull between freedom and duty. Mei Zhu Yu embodies discipline, but also a quiet longing for connection. To me, they represent balance, not only between human and spirit realms but also between love and sacrifice.

Fans of the original novel have been anticipating this adaptation for years. Known by its native title 子夜归, the web novel captivated readers with its blend of fantasy and romance. Though I have not read the web novel, from other reviews and comments, fans say that Moonlit Reunion stays true to the essence of the source material while adding cinematic visuals, lush costumes, and a rich portrayal of Tang Dynasty Chang’an.

Where to Watch Moonlit Reunion

For audiences in the United States, where to watch Moonlit Reunion is streaming exclusively on Disney+. Subtitles are available. We’re not sure if Moonlit Reunion will be available on WeTV, Tencent, or Viki in the US at a later date. At present, when checking the apps, they all have the show available, but says “Not available in your region.”
